Little shoutout to our next braavheart, Felica Van Ham. The high-fashion scene has no secrets to her. Meet this über-talented and creative fashion photographer and model scout.
First of all, can you introduce yourself and what you do in a few sentences?
I am Felicia a 26-year-old photographer and model scout who lives and works in Antwerp. I have been working as a freelance photographer for 6 years now with a focus on fashion photography. For a couple of years, I've been scouting models as well. I work for Model Partner, an ambitious American agency that focuses on the high-fashion market. I also guide the girls in the process of doing international modeling. It's the ideal combination for me! A lot of variety and I meet so many nice people through my work.
Do you have a quote/slogan where you live / how you stand in life?
Dreams don't work unless you do. I’m a true believer of the fact that hard work always comes first, if you're not doing your utmost best to achieve something it simply won’t happen.
How do you manage to maintain a healthy work/life balance?
I find that one of the hardest things, running your own business but still having enough time for friends and family. Easily you feel guilty when you are on vacation or doing a lot of fun activities with your friends because at home there is always work waiting for you. I'm still looking for that balance. I try not to work at night anymore and just go to sleep at a normal hour. Playing sports and eating healthy food also helps me a lot to find a balance.
What brings you peace after a busy/hectic day?
A long walk along the kaai in Antwerp with my dog or have a drink with friends.
Objectives on a professional level?
Scouting many new top models worldwide. It's great to see when the girls get to shoot very big brands like Louis Vuitton, Prada... Then you think: yes, I'm a small part of it! When it comes to photography, I would like to shoot editorials abroad in the most beautiful places in the world.
How do you combine this with your private life?
Luckily my whole environment is super supportive. My family and boyfriend give me a lot of freedom to do my job. They even scout along enthusiastically when they see a nice girl who has potential. My true friends get it when something work-related pops-up last minute, that's all that matters.
If you could give a 1 (ultimate) tip to other ambitious women, what would it be?
Believe in yourself and focus on your trajectory and not that of others. Entrepreneurship goes hand in hand with trial and error. It is normal that you encounter some setbacks from time to time, try not to dwell too much on this. And just move forward with good courage and believe that this time it will work. You are not the only one experiencing ups and downs, although sometimes it seems that way!
Which book do you think is an absolute must-read for our braavheart community?
I find the podcast of Oprah very inspiring. (Super Soul Converations) She is for me the example of a power woman! From my own soil, I find the work & life of Kelly Derienmaeker & Anouck Meier very cool! A lot of situations that are very recognizable, a sincere podcast by 2 inspiring & cool women!
Who do you think should not be missing from our #Braavhearts section?
Droika Engelen, ambitious creative in the field of interior styling. One of the most resilient and hard-working women I know! She also has her own blog DDesign.
